POEM Niños Inocentes

unseen and unkempt --
they seem to be tiny scenes scrounging
for mercy and the attendant money.

they abound in the darkness --
they who were conceived in darkness,
born in darkness, (mal)nourished in darkness --
and we, in the naked, dirty white light,
see only darkness in them.

they do have dark skin,
bequeathed by the passing of time
and smoke-belching vehicles.

do they have dark souls, then?

no. only their innocence,
shattered by sheer darkness,
polluted by our definite
indifference.

fear maligns their youth.

streetkids are products
of our malevolence.

nothing more, nothing less.
